Man flees burning home, investigators call fire suspicious

CHICO, Calif. - A Chico man had to flee his burning home late Wednesday night.  Police and fire investigators said the cause of the fire is suspicious.

The fire was reported Wednesday at 10:53 p.m. at 1158 East 10th Street.  Police and fire officials were on scene for several hours.

The front of the home was burned, including the living room, den and kitchen.  A car in the front yard was destroyed and a boat damaged.

The homeowner Bob Travers said he stayed up late, working on his computer when he noticed something was wrong.

"I smelled what smelled like a wood stove and that didn't make sense to me," said Travers.

"I got up from my computer and went to the front door, I was shocked to see my front porch lit up, not by my light but by the glow of the flames."

Travers and his two dogs got out safely.
