REDDING, Calif. - Medical marijuana advocates James Benno and his sons Jacob and Logan were arraigned Thursday, and now sit behind bars at the Shasta County Jail on $500,000 bail.
Their attorneys argued that the bail should be reduced drastically, especially for James Benno himself.
48-year-old James Benno and his sons 22-year-old Jacob and 19-year-old Logan were arrested Tuesday morning at their home in Olinda.
They were charged with: manufacturing honey oil, cultivation of marijuana, weapons and ammunition violations and other charges.
During the court proceedings, James Benno sent a message to the media, raising his middle finger for news cameras to capture. He also showed off a bruise on his shoulder, inferring he received the bruise while he was being arrested.
Several demonstrators stood outside the Shasta County Jail including James Benno's daughter Jessica, who said the unfolding drama was inevitable.
"I'm not going to say this is what we wanted, but this is where it had to go, at least for my dad to feel like he is serving his purpose," Jessica Benno said. "This is what he's been waiting for."
Jessica Benno spent the night outside the jail Wednesday, and vowed to stay outside the jail until her father and brothers were released.
A preliminary hearing was set for June 5. A reduction in bail will also be considered that day.
