New York Marathon Runners

Two years ago, Beatriz Craven helped her mother shave her head after chemotherapy treatments made her hair fall out. Having just purchased a cotton scarf at a high-end French retailer in Houston, she then tied off the blue and white garment around her mother's bald head. "My hope was that these little things would help," said Craven, who was in New York this week for the city's now canceled marathon. Her mother, Maria del Carmen Castillo, 58, died in March from ovarian cancer, prompting the 27-year-old daughter to begin training for her first-ever 26.2-mile race. "I didn't realize how much anger I had, and I wanted to turn it into something positive." She also plans to wear her mother's scarf. "I thought is was only right to wear it, and try to be fearless like she was." So when Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced Friday that the race had been canceled, Craven hardly hesitated. "I had a two-second reaction," she said. "I'm going to run anyway."
