The extramarital affair acknowledged Friday by David Petraeus in his letter resigning his position as CIA director came as a surprise to a number of people who know him but represented an acceptance of responsibility characteristic of the man, they said. "If you're running the operation, you really can't step out of line," said Richard Haver, who spent 34 years in the federal government specializing in intelligence operations. Petraeus himself would have had to severely discipline if not fire any agency employees involved in similar behavior, said Haver, who is retired after having served as deputy for community affairs for the intelligence community. "You're compromising, potentially, your security."

America woke up Wednesday, looked into a giant mirror made up of millions of votes and saw how it has been changing for decades. It wasn't just President Obama's re-election and the diverse coalition of minorities, women and youth that kept him in power. For the first time, voters approved same-sex marriage in three states. Margaret Hoover, a Republican analyst and CNN contributor, called it "a watershed moment." Meanwhile, Wisconsin elected the country's first openly gay U.S. senator. Two states legalized the recreational use of marijuana. A record 20 women will be serving in the U.S. Senate. And a record number of new Asian-American and Latino representatives were elected to Congress. All this would have been unthinkable a generation ago, as would the idea the country would elect, let alone re-elect, its first black president.

The Pentagon released Friday an hour-by-hour timeline of the September 11 assault on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, highlighting when Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and senior commanders were informed of the attack and when decisions were made to move forces to assist. The release comes as the Obama administration is facing increasing questions over its response to the attack.

After his state's coastline took the brunt of Superstorm Sandy, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie said Friday that he expects power to be almost fully restored statewide by Saturday night. "Life will be back -- for most of New Jersey -- to normal come Sunday," he told reporters. More than 175,000 households in the Garden State are still in the dark, and homes with saltwater electrical damage will have to be inspected by electricians before having their power restored.

Eleven days after Superstorm Sandy made landfall, flooding nearly all of the Rockaways, they are still cold and in the dark. Huddled beneath blankets and with the car's heat cranked up, 56-year-old Matt Lintonmapp Jr. has spent every night sleeping in his car since Sandy left him homeless. "My place got washed out," he said. "There's nothing left."
