Illinois lawmakers approved a new measure Tuesday that will allow undocumented immigrants in the state to get driver's licenses. Gov. Pat Quinn has said he will sign the bill, which allows the granting of special temporary driver's licenses to undocumented immigrants. In a statement, the governor said the law will "ensure every Illinois motorist is properly licensed and empower more immigrants to become stronger contributors to our economy."
US-Extreme-Weather (Will update)
The past year saw a mild winter give way to a balmier-than-normal spring, followed by a sweltering summer and high temperatures that lingered into the fall, all punctuated by extreme drought and intense storms. Now 2012 is officially in the books as the hottest year on record for the continental United States and the second-worst for weather-related disasters, the U.S. government announced Tuesday.
Colorado-Theater-Shooting (will update)
James Holmes sat in the interrogation room in his T-shirt, white socks and boxers. Gone was the body armor that police found him wearing when they encountered him outside a movie theater where scores of people had been shot. Police had cut it off. Craig Appel -- the lead detective in the investigation into the 12 killings at the Century Aurora 16 Multiplex Theater in Aurora, Colorado -- testified Tuesday that paper bags had been placed over Holmes' hands to potentially preserve evidence. As Holmes was being interviewed, he used the paper bags as puppets.

The Obama administration is considering the possibility of removing all U.S. troops in Afghanistan after the NATO combat mission officially finishes at the end of 2014, White House officials said Tuesday.

For 15 years, Ashley Broadway has devoted her life to the military and to her spouse, an Army lieutenant colonel. The former school teacher found a new job and made new friends every time she had to relocate bases, including a move to South Korea. When a deployment to the Middle East separated the couple, Broadway took care of the couple's young son Carson on her own. Now at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, and with a second child on the way, Broadway wanted to settle down and get to know more spouses like herself. So she applied for membership to the Association of Bragg Officers' Spouses. "I thought, 'Here's a chance to make some close friends who would really understand me,'" Broadway said. "And I could get very active in events that help other families like mine. I was excited, really excited to be a part of this group." But the Bragg spouse club apparently didn't feel the same way. Broadway's married to Lt. Col. Heather Mack. The officers' spouse club didn't want her, she believes, because she's gay.

Two Indian soldiers died in a firefight with Pakistani army troops in the disputed Kashmir region, the Indian army said Tuesday, amid heightened tensions in the region following a deadly clash two days ago.

UK-Amy-Winehouse-Inquest
A new investigation into the death of singer Amy Winehouse found that she died of accidental alcohol poisoning, authorities in the London borough of Camden announced Tuesday. It's the same result as the original investigation, but the earlier one had to be thrown out because the coroner did not have the right qualifications. Winehouse died at the age of 27 on July 23, 2011.
