Pet owner alert: Is a dognapper snatching dogs in Chico?

CHICO, Calif. - Some people fear a dognapper is on the loose in Chico.

On Monday, Chico Police said  a dog owner stopped a man who was trying to take his dog from his yard in the 1700 block on North Cherry Street.

The male suspect was wearing a hoodie.  When the owner yelled at the suspect he ran off.

This is the second dognapping reported in the Chico area in less than a week.  The first case came to a tragic ending.

Cody, a 6-year-old Australian Shepherd, was taken from his yard in the 4100 block of Rio Grande Drive in Chico last Tuesday (January 7).  His owners offered a $2,000 reward for Cody's return and started a facebook page called Bring Cody Home.

On Monday his owner made a sad discovery. Someone had returned the dog's lifeless body to her fenced yard.

According to the Butte County Sheriff's Office, a vehicle was seen leaving the area in a hurry after Cody was taken on January 7.

The vehicle was described as a dull/primer white van with no windows, similar to an ice cream or postal truck.  The van has lettering or wording on the back of the vehicle in neon yellow or orange.

If you have information call the Butte County Sheriff's Office.
