SACRAMENTO, Calif. - A 33-year old man from Chico who is suspected of stealing a vehicle out of Chico this morning is dead after he shot a police dog Friday afternoon.
Sacramento Police tell us that Lucas J. Webb and 28-year old Leslie McCulley stole the car from the Chico area early this morning and ended up in a high speed police pursuit in Sacramento near Broadway and 24th Street.
Shortly after the chase started, police discontinued their pursuit for safety reasons. The driver was speeding through a residential neighborhood with pedestrians and children nearby.
Later police located the same vehicle abandoned near 4th Avenue and Marty Way. Police searched the area and found two suspects that matched the description of the same man and woman in the suspected stolen vehicle. As Officers approached the suspects, they fled on foot near Robertson Way and Riverside Boulevard.
As the Officer and his K-9 chased the suspect, the suspect turned around and shot the K-9 Officer in the face and the paw. The police handler returned fire and the suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.
The woman who is in her late 20's was caught and is in police custody.
The K-9 Officer, 4-year old Bodie, went into surgery for significant injuries to his jaw and mouth. He is currently in stable condition and is expected to live.
