REDDING, Calif. - A Sacramento man, accused of kidnapping and soliciting a 16-year-old girl, was arrested on Wednesday.
On April 17 Redding police responded to a report of a teen flagging down passersby for assistance. In an attempt to get away from her kidnapper the unidentified juvenile was able to get the attention of an adult near the 1900 block of Hartnell Avenue telling them she was being held against her will inside a nearby apartment.
When officers arrived, the teen told them she had been abducted a month earlier from Sacramento.
She then identified her captor as 25-year-old Melvin Baldwin-Green Jr.
As a result of this report, police learned that Baldwin-Green had contacted the victim as she walked home from a party in the Sacramento area. The victim said Baldwin-Green forced her into his vehicle and drove her to Redding against her will.
The victim had been reported as a runway but officers believed she may have been taken against her will.
Police said the victim was held inside two different apartments both with locks on doors and windows that required a key for entry and exit. The victim said Baldwin-Green took her phone, and threatened to harm her if she tried to escape.
According to police Baldwin-Green forced his victim into prostitution and promised her a bus ticket home once she had earned enough money. Police say the victim complied with Baldwin-Green's demands and engaged in sex acts with numerous men for various amounts of money.
Police also said Baldwin-Green Jr. molested her numerous times and refused to let her go.
On Wednesday, Investigators located an internet escort ad believed to have been placed by Baldwin-Green. Authorities then set up an appointment with the man who placed the ad. After making the appointment officers witnessed Baldwin-Green drive a woman to a pre-arranged meeting on Churn Creek Road. The woman was dropped off nearby and Baldwin-Green was arrested.
Evidence was located during the investigation that indicates Baldwin-Green was actively involved in prostitution related activities and was functioning as a pimp. He was subsequently arrested on a list of charges, including kidnapping, human trafficking of a minor and unlawful sexual intercourse with a minor.
The victim has since been returned to the safety of her family in Sacramento.
Baldwin-Green was previously convicted of an offense related to prostitution and sentenced to jail time in Sacramento County Jail in 2013.
