REDDING, Calif. - A City of Shasta Lake man was arrested for arson early Thursday, after a series of fires burned along Twin View Boulevard in Redding. The suspect reportedly told police he set the fires to light his way in the darkness.
According to a news release from Redding Police, Sergeant Mike Wood was driving northbound on Twin View Boulevard around 4 a.m. Thursday. Just north of Constitution Way he saw five to six small, campfire-sized fires burning in the center of the road. The fires were burning on or near the painted lines separating the north and southbound lanes.
Wood located 44-year-old Clint Bell, from the City of Shasta Lake, walking southbound in the southbound lane near the fires.
The investigation revealed Bell had gone to a nearby business, purchased a gasoline container and gas and then began setting fires in the roadway. He had set a total of 12 separate fires.
Bell told police he was a firefighter who specialized in fighting wildland fires. He said he was setting the fires to light his way in the darkness. Bell was arrested and booked at the Shasta County Jail for arson.
