Redding police using bicycles to patrol downtown areas

REDDING, Calif. - The Redding Police Department has added a new way to patrol the city. On Wednesday they started patrolling the downtown Redding area and Hilltop Drive with Bicycles.

Sergeant Brian Barner said the purpose is to increase officer presence. The department is using two bicycles but expect to increase that number to a total of six.

"By being on the bicycles we can get into areas that we might not be able to get into in a police car or on a police motorcycle," said Sgt. Barner. "We can go into the alley and different spots. The promenade downtown which is difficult to patrol."

Redding officers will be taking rotations between the traffic sergeant and four motor officers.
