Rescuers search for high-risk missing woman

PARADISE, Calif. - A 50-year-old Paradise woman with special needs went missing Thursday morning after police said she wandered away from a residential care facility.

The search started about 7:30 a.m.

Her name is Stephanie Chalmers, and Paradise police said they believe she wanted to go on a hike and never told anyone.

Authorities began their search at Billie Park with 14 rescuers working to find her. They took to the sky and knocked on doors in the surrounding areas.

They also checked out trails throughout the park.

Chalmers lives at a residential care home off Forty Oaks Lane. Police said Chalmers is mentally challenged and has never done this before.

"She has a tendency according to staff at the care facility that if she removes her shoes, she stops moving," said Paradise Police Sergeant Craig Gallagher. "So at this point, we are thinking that she has her shoes off sitting in lounge chair somewhere in someone's backyard having a relaxing day. That's our hope."

Chalmers is described as 4 foot seven inches, weighing 125 pounds, with short brown hair. She was last seen wearing a black shirt, denim shorts and hiking boots.

Paradise police are asking you to call 911 if she you see her. The search is expected to continue throughout the night.
