Sex offender arrested for exposing himself in tanning salon

REDDING, Calif. - Police have arrested a registered sex offender they say exposed himself to a tanning salon employee.

Investigators with the Redding Police Department said 30-year-old Michael Silva called Tropical Tan on Hilltop Drive back on the evening of Dec. 14, 2013.

A store employee told police Silva first called asking about tanning hours and pricing. Silva reportedly entered the business moments later, was given a room, and then called for the employee. When she approached, investigators said Silva quickly opened the door and was standing there naked and aroused.

The employee then told Silva to leave which he did without incident.

On Jan. 8, officers learned of Silva's identity when other local tanning salons reported having suspicious contacts with someone matching Silva's description. An individual at a salon, which wasn't mentioned by police, took down a license plate number.

Silva, who's from San Mateo, was using a rental car. Police contacted the rental car company who then contacted Silva and asked him to return the car early.

The suspect was later arrested at a home on Pegasus Street.

Silva is a registered sex offender with prior indecent exposure arrests and convictions.

He was booked at the Shasta County jail on the charges of burglary, indecent exposure, and failing to comply with sex registration requirements.  Silva is being held in lieu of bail in the amount of $100,000, according to the Redding Police Department.
