The San Francisco 49ers announced on Monday that they waived injured running back Kendall Hunter and signed running back Glenn Winston to a three-year deal.
It appears the 49ers may be trying to sneak Hunter through waivers, hoping no team will claim him. If he goes through unclaimed the 49ers can put him on injured reserve.
Hunter tore his ACL in July and is unlikely to play in the 2014 season. He becomes an unrestricted free agent at the end of the 2014 season. That would make it a risk for any team to claim Hunter now.
Hunter is scheduled to make $645,000 in salary in 2014, according to NFLPA records.
Winston, 25, is an undrafted rookie free agent who spent two years at Michigan State before finishing his collegiate career at Northwood University. In 2013, Winston played in eight games and rushed for 717 yards and nine touchdowns on 175 carries for the Timberwolves.
