The Tampa Bay Buccaneers announced rookie running back Charles Sims is expected to miss 12-14 weeks following surgery scheduled for Saturday on his right ankle.

The third round pick out of West Virginia was injured during Tuesday's practice. While a setback for the Bucs, it does come at one of the team's deepest positions as Sims was competing for snaps behind starter Doug Martin with Bobby Rainey and Mike James.

Head coach Lovie Smith and offensive coordinator Jeff Tedford had praised the 6-foot, 213-pound Sims' versatility as a runner and receiver during training camp.
