Cardinals 4, Padres 3

ST. LOUIS -- Pinch-hitting with the bases loaded and none out in the bottom of the eighth, Jon Jay slammed a two-run double off the center field wall as St. Louis jumped into second place in the National League Central with a win over streaking San Diego.

The Cardinals stayed two games behind first-place Milwaukee and leapfrogged Pittsburgh in the division and for the first wild-card spot. The Padres lost for just the fourth time in 15 games and saw their five-game winning streak end.

Tony Cruz started the rally with a single, one pitch after his apparent swing and miss at a 3-2 pitch from reliever Alex Torres (1-1) was ruled a foul ball. Pinch hitter Daniel Descalso walked and third baseman Matt Carpenter singled to fill the bases, setting the stage for Jay's game-winning hit off reliever Nick Vincent.
