Detroit Pistons forward-center Greg Monroe wants out of Motown so much he is willing to risk playing a year on rookie money for the chance to cash in as a free agent.
On Tuesday, Monroe told the Pistons he will accept their qualifying offer with the goal of becoming an unrestricted free agent in the summer of 2015. USA TODAY reported Monroe has until Oct. 1 to sign the qualifying offer.
The 24-year-old Monroe's decision means he will earn slightly under $5.5 million this upcoming season. Reports out of Detroit said the team had offered Monroe a five-year deal worth $60 million.
Monroe, a restricted free agent, decided to forgo signing an offer sheet with the Pistons, which they could have matched.
Monroe averaged 15.2 points and 9.3 rebounds a game last season.
