REDDING, Calif. - Pacific Gas and Electric Company (PG&E) is beginning work this week to upgrade approximately 2,080 feet of natural gas distribution pipeline serving 26 customers near downtown Redding. PG&E crews will perform the upgrades through the end of May.
This pipeline replacement project will improve the safety and integrity of the natural gas system serving commercial and residential customers.
The pipeline upgrades are generally only one or two blocks in length, or shorter.
Crews will work on West Street between 11th Street and Eureka Way; 11th Street between North Court and West streets; North Court Street between Eureka Way and a block northwest of 11th Street; Magnolia Street at 10th Street; and Mary Street near Seventh Street.
Some off-street work will also be done to replace customer gas service lines.
Work will generally run Monday to Friday between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. Crews may work on some Saturdays and as late as 7 p.m. if needed.
Crews will bore beneath the surface and will trench when necessary to install 1-, 2- and 4-inch plastic gas lines.
Detours and traffic controls will be be in place. One lane of southbound traffic on North Court Street will be closed for a time between 11th Street and Eureka Way.
PG&E has sent letters to customers to inform them of the project and will directly contact any customers who may be impacted by a brief interruption in gas service as new lines are placed into service.
Once upgrades are complete, the new pipes will be strength tested to ensure they are operating safely before being placed into service. Following standard safety practices, crews will vent natural gas from the pipeline as needed throughout the project. As PG&E vents the pipe, the smell of natural gas and the sound of venting may be noticeable to nearby homes and businesses, depending on wind direction.
The natural gas will quickly dissipate into the atmosphere and will not be harmful; however, PG&E encourages anyone who has concerns about natural gas odors in or around their home or business to call us at 1-800-743-5000.
