UPDATE: Investigators work to identify three bodies found in burned car

MAGALIA, Calif. - Detectives worked late into the night investigating a mysterious and gruesome crime.  Three bodies were discovered in a burned car early Thursday morning in rural Butte County.

Two of the bodies were found in the trunk, and a third in the back seat of the car.   The vehicle was fully-engulfed in flames when crews got to the scene on the outskirts of Magalia on the Skyway near Hupp Coutelenc Road.  The vehicle fire was reported at 12:15 a.m. Thursday.

Investigators said the 4-door green Acura TL had been stolen from Sacramento on Tuesday.

On Friday KRCR News Channel 7 checked in with Butte County Undersheriff Kory Honea, who said his entire detective unit is on the case.

Honea said their first order of business is identifying the remains.  It's not an easy task given the condition of the bodies.

"The fact that the bodies were burned makes identification very difficult," said Honea.  "That's the first step in our investigation to identify who those victims are. And then from there, try to piece together the last hours of their lives and where they were at and who was around to ultimately determine what happened to them."

Honea said some interviews have been conducted, but more will be on the way.
