REDDING, Calif. - Redding Police are investigating to see if a driver involved in a fatal crash on Highway 273 was under the influence of prescription medication.
The Shasta County Coroner's Office identified the woman who died as Sandra Van Larson, 69 of Redding,
The collision happened around 9:30 a.m. Tuesday in South Redding at Highway 273 and Westwood Avenue.
Police said 29-year-old Darren Horn of Cottonwood was southbound on Highway 273 in a 1996 Ford Explorer when he ran a red light. His SUV broadsided a Hyundai Sonata driven by Van Larson as she was turning left onto northbound Highway 273.
Police said Van Larson had a green light to make the turn from Westwood Avenue.
The impact pushed the sedan into a third car, a Honda Civic.
Van Larson was pronounced dead at the scene. Horn and the driver of the Civic were taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.
Officers said Horn may have been using prescription medication prior to the crash. They planned to investigate if medication was a factor in the collision.
Lillian Walton of Happy Valley was at the intersection and rushed to see if she could help Van Larson, but said the victim was unresponsive.
No arrests were made pending the investigation
Highway 273 was closed for much of the day as police took photos and investigated the crash.
Traffic was detoured from Highway 273 between Girvan Road and South Bonnyview Road.
