Walle "The World's Ugliest Dog" returns home to Chico

CHICO, Calif. - A Chico dog named Walle has achieved more than his 20 minutes of fame  since winning the World's Ugliest Dog contest less than a week ago.

After a media tour that took him and his owner from Petaluma to New York City, they're glad be back home.

If beauty is in the eye of the beholder, perhaps so too is ugliness.  The four-year-old beagle, basset and boxer mix won the title of World's Ugliest at the annual dog competition held at the Sonoma-Marin Fair.   But many think Walle is adorable, and definitely not ugly.

His owner, Tammie Barbee, calls him "different."

As one judge put it at the competition Friday, Walle looks like he's been photo-shopped.  His head appears too big for his body and his rear end looks too big for his legs. Barbee explains, Walle's oddness is more obvious when you meet him in person.

"It's hard to see the difference in him on television," said Barbee.  "But in person you can totally tell all of his different unique characteristics."

The title of World's Ugliest Dog is a source of pride in the Barbee household.

"I'm proud that he can win anything," said Barbee.
Since winning the crown, Walle hasn't had to beg for attention.  He has  appeared on several national television programs, including the Today Show, Fox and Friends and The View.

Barbee described the moment Walle came face to face with The View host Whoopi Goldberg.
"She was nice. It was only a brief meeting, but she loved Walle. She got on her knees and just started petting him and didn't want to stop."

Barbee and Walle were scheduled to be on the Jimmy Kimmel Show Wednesday night.  But Barbee said there was a mix-up in the flight arrangements so the appearance didn't happen.

Along with the title, and a trophy, Walle also took home a $1,500 cash prize.
