TRINIDAD, Calif. - A United States Coast Guard helicopter circled College Cove Beach in Trinidad until dark Thursday, searching for a man who a sheriff's deputy said may have fallen off of a cliff and into the ocean.
The call came in close to 3 p.m., and the details of the incident are still under investigation. The man was on the state trail and it is still unclear exactly how he ended up in the ocean.
A Cal Fire official said the search was like looking for a needle in a haystack.
The ocean conditions did not help either, as strong currents splashed against the rocks near the coast. And the water temperature of 53 degrees reduced the chances of the man's survival, especially after several hours in the water.
A U.S. Coast Guard public affairs official said the helicopter search is suspended for now, after they saturated the search area. It is unclear at this time if other agencies will continue the search.
