Group works to get kids clothes for school

EUREKA, Calif. - The Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods is working to ensure every child has new clothes to go back in school in. They are doing so with their annual back to school shopping program, ChildSpree.

This is a program that has been going on for 15 years. The organization provides children in need with a $100 gift card to shop at Kohls. People in the community then volunteer to take those children shopping before school begins.

“All the children that we're targeting are ones that otherwise wouldn't have the opportunity for new school clothing and as you know if you're going to a school where you don't have uniforms, how you look is unfortunately a big deal," said Liz Smith, the executive director for the Boys & Girls Club of the Redwoods.

The program usually helps 400 children each year. However, this year there is only enough funding to help 40 children. That sum is $4,000.

The Boys & Girls Club hopes to help another 80 kids, but needs to raise $8,000 in one week to reach that goal.
