GASQUET, Calif. - A 54-year-old woman from South Dakota sustained fatal injuries in a traffic collision that occurred on Highway 199 on July 16, according to officials.
On Sunday at around 6:10 p.m., Crescent City Area California Highway Patrol (CHP) officers responded to a traffic collision located on Highway 199, north of Gasquet, at mile post marker 24.08., according to the CHP.
Officers said when they arrived they found a two-vehicle traffic collision involving a Harley Davidson motorcycle from Lead, South Dakota and a Jeep Cherokee from Redding, California.
Officials said for reasons still under investigation, the southbound motorcycle crossed into the northbound traffic lane and collided head on with the Jeep Cherokee.
The three people in the Jeep Cherokee were taken to Sutter Coast Hospital for treatment of minor injuries. The 54-year-old woman riding the motorcycle succumbed to her injuries at the scene, according to officials.
Investigators said due to the extent of damage to the vehicles, injuries to the involved parties and the extent of the investigation, the highway was closed for 45 minutes. One way control was then established and continued for an hour and a half, according to investigators.
The cause of the collision is under investigation.
