Redding High School Student Finishes First In Alcatraz Winter Swim

REDDING, Calif. - A Northstate teenager made some big waves in the annual Alcatraz Winter Swim in San Francisco Bay.

The swim was held on January 5.  Despite the cold water and strong current Hunter Wright, 16 of Redding, came out of the water in first place among 44 swimmers.   The race went from Alcatraz to San Francisco's Aquatic Park.

Wright is an Enterprise High School student.  He swam in the 49 degree water wearing only a Speedo, without a wetsuit.  He admits he must be a little crazy to swim in such cold water.

"I love having that great feeling just in me," said Wright. "I don't know what it is."

Wright wants qualify and compete in the 2016 Rio Summer Olympic games.
