REDDING, Calif. - In an early season Division III Northern League clash at Corning, a rested Anderson Cubs team shocked the Cardinals 33-23 in this Friday night's Xtra Point Game of the Week.
In other featured action, Chico and Shasta had physical home losses, while Oroville and Burney posted impressive wins.
Anderson, (4-1, 1-0), had their hands full with Corning's bruising defense and speed, falling behind 9-0 early after a safety and 74 yard kickoff return by Curtis McCoy. The Cards, (4-2, 1-1), also boast the state's interception leader Brandon Stewart, who picked off Anderson's Rodney Kincaid in the first half.
The Cubs defense caused turnovers, too, with a pair of fumble recoveries in the second quarter, one setting up Kincaid's 21 yard score that cut the lead to 9-7.
Parker Phillips rushed for one score and dove into the end zone with a TD reception, as Anderson outlasted Corning, 33-23.
In Redding, a non-league matchup between unbeatens from two states, Shasta High and Damonte Ranch High out of Nevada, was an exciting shootout. The visiting Mustangs boast Division I prospect, junior quarterback Cade McNamara, who showed a lightning quick release but at times was foiled by a slashing Wolves defense.
Shasta's offense saw big plays from Kurtis Gipson, who had a beautiful touchdown catch on a corner fade thrown by Ian Garcia early in the second quarter, as well as senior running back Seth Park rambled for a 49 yard score as the Wolves, (4-1), led 21-14 at half.
McNamara found his stride, however, and the bigger school, Damonte Ranch, (6-0), ranked as high as fourth in their state, escaped with a 55-41 win.
In Chico at Pleasant Valley High School's stadium, Chico, (3-2), took an early lead as quarterback Ty Thomas rushed for an early score to put them on top of visiting Sutter.
But the Huskies, (4-1), answered on Bryce Kunkle's 63 yard touchdown run, and held on for a 14-7 win.
In the City of Shasta Lake, a matchup of winless rivals saw Oroville, (1-4), spoil Central Valley's homecoming 12-7. The Falcons are now 0-5.
In a Division V Mountain Valley League game in Burney, visiting Biggs, (4-2, 1-1), topped the Raiders 28-12. Burney falls to 1-5 and 0-2 in league play.
In other games, Redding Christian crushed Dunsmuir, 55-20. Trinity stayed unbeaten, downing Etna, 40-7. Big Valley blasted Happy Camp, 59-0. Los Molinos and Princeton combined for 102 points in the Bulldogs' 60-42 win.
Butte Valley claimed the Battle of the Border, 45-7, over Tulelake. Weed edged Hayfork, 24-20, handing the Timberjacks their first loss. Chester won at Mt. Shasta, 28-8.
Paradise outscored Cascade Christian, 42-29. Red Bluff shocked Yreka, 24-20. Eureka got past Enterprise 35-28 to stay unbeaten.
Gridley won at home over Colusa, 39-14. Las Plumas won their fourth game of the season, 39-15 over visiting Live Oak. In Oregon, Lakeview blanked Modoc, 33-0.
This week's episode also featured Player of the Week Dylan Moore of West Valley High School and an update on local football product Aaron Rodgers of the Green Bay Packers.
