One More Cold Day, Temps Warm Through Next Week

This week starts with another cold day, sunshine will prevail as high pressure strengthens and builds eastward.

Winds will stick around in the valley tonight keeping the temperatures up. Redding and Red Bluff will likely remain above freezing, whereas Chico and Oroville will have a better chance of making it into the 20s as the wind is blocked by the mountains. Due to this, both Glenn and Butte Counties have Hard Freeze Warnings out until 9 tomorrow morning.

Several areas didn’t make it above freezing today, and the warmest spot – Red Bluff – barely kissed 50 degrees. The higher you got the cooler it was, Alturas peaked at 8 degrees today after bottoming out at -21. The good news is that the cold air is starting to move out. We have one more cold day tomorrow, but by Tuesday we’ll start to warm back up as the high centered over the eastern Pacific starts to build eastward. The warmest core of the entire system will be within 100 miles of the northern Sacramento Valley. That means we’ll see temps in the mid to upper 60s midweek before they moderate to the low to mid 60s under bright sunshine. Not bad for mid January.
