Very Cold Temperatures Overnight, Sunny Skies and Warming Temps Next Week

Redding, Red Bluff, Chico

Hard Freeze Warnings are in effect in the Sacramento Valley tonight until 9am Sunday morning.

An arctic airmass is moving our way from the Gulf of Alaska and will clear the skies out overnight.  Winds overnight will keep the temps in the valley up.  Redding, Red Bluff and Corning will remain above 20 degrees overnight.  Other areas that are more sheltered will see the temperatures plummet.  When the wind does die down, some areas could see the temperature drop 10 or more degrees over the course of an hour.  Many areas in the valley will drop below 20 degrees with teens widespread in the foothills and well below zero lows for many areas in the mountains.  The high plains around Alturas will see temps near -20, whereas the mountains and forested areas will bottom out near -10.

During the day the clear sunny skies will allow the temperatures to jump quickly back into the low 50s for afternoon highs in the valley and the temps only go up from there.  We’ll have another cold morning to start the week, but the afternoon highs will continue to warm into the mid to upper 60s by the middle of the week.  This is all due to a very strong high built into the eastern Pacific.  It is holding most of the very cold air out to the east, but will keep our skies clear and winds calm overnight allowing the temperatures to plummet.
