One of the coldest storms we've seen since December will move into the Northstate today and Tuesday. Winter Storm Warnings have been posted for the mountains.
temperatures will struggle to make it out of the 40s today. That as a strong system moves in off the ocean bringing lots of clouds and rain. Thunderstorms are possible tomorrow too as the upper level low starts to move overhead. There is a decent chance for some good accumulating snow in the mountains on all sides of the valley. Expect areas to our north to see the best chance for snow and could experience the most drastic travel impacts. Chain restrictions are likely as you head into areas above 3,000 feet in all directions tomorrow.
The upper level low will have some turning with height but likely won't be as dynamic as the upper level conditions last Wednesday. The biggest mitigating factor is the cloud cover, if there are clear spots mixed in with the rain there will be more thunderstorms possible, more clouds mean fewer storms. Our best chance for strong storms will be on Tuesday and Wednesday of this week as the skies start to clear.
Wednesday will bring clearer skies and high pressure building into the area. Models are still hinting at some instability built into the region left over from Monday and Tuesday's storm but it won't bring impressive CAPE values and the sheer parameters that make for rotating storms just won't be there. Thursday brings another weak system which will miss us to the north and bring some rain showers to the mountains of Siskiyou and Shasta Counties. Otherwise we'll see a gradual clearing throughout the rest of the week with temperatures finally returning back to normal by the end of the week.
